2 months, 1 week ago2 months, 1 week ago@a-trilobite: Looked it up on Rockd app said the bedrock there was from the neoproterozoic era. So 1,000-541 million years ago. So back to the drawing board?!

2 months, 1 week ago2 months, 1 week agoCouldn’t find information on how old the land in this state might be; that reference only referred to white pines. Could still be billions of years old. Near the junction of the Deep River and the Rocky River outside Sanford NC.

2 months, 1 week ago2 months, 1 week agoFound this one in the the 275-acre White Pines Nature Preserve; conserved because of its namesake, a tree more commonly found in higher, cooler climates. “Curiously, the white pine (Pinus strobus) was once common here — more than 10,000 years ago during the last ice age.” That’s all the information I could find about the age of the area.

Looks like stromatolite, do you know the age of the area you found it in?

If it’s a stromatolite it would’ve been from an area that is billions of years old, so maybe it’s something else. But it still looks exactly like one.

That makes the stromatolite possibility larger, although by that time they were becoming less common as more complex life forms were taking over, but they were (and still are) around. I’m not sure about that specific area, but they were probably about 40-60% percent of the life around, so this could be one!

Maybe @daniel-park or @leonardo-miranda could help out
-
this is an unusual object. it may or may not be stromatolite, if not then it’s just rock layering.
-
I agree with @leonardo-miranda.

Thanks for the help!

It is going to be a stromatolite, while they are considered one of the first organisms they still exist today.

@chloe-geddes could help

It is hard to tell from this picture but it could be an iron stone (is it heavy?) or agate (if you broke it, it would show conchoidal fractures)
