4 months ago4 months ago@lynette_luff May I ask a stupid question ? … how can you tell that there is bone in a piece of rock? It seems most of the stuff I have found are gastropods, cephalopods, trilobites, etc but if there is bone, that means it would need to be a fish or small amphibian perhaps, right?

I would love to have been able to handle this specimen. There seems to be a lot of bones, but they are quite small.

I am a retired teacher who was blessed enough to work on a site where the fossils were at the school. for more than 30 years. I became an amateur paleontologist when one of my kids brought me the head of a rib bone. My school lies in the Drakensberg with the soil layet being in the Katberg and Beaufort range. my best find
-
Sorry my best find was a Proterosuchus of which there are only 11 specimen. They are so scarce I wasn’t allowed tobkerp

to keep a shard of it. Bloemfontein National Museum helped me to buy a cast of a specimen. Im aiming to start teaching the children of our region about our fossil heritage. I was bitten by the fossil bug. I believe that when the rockhounding bug bites you you are sick, very sick indeed. Howevervwhen the fossilbug bites you become terminally ill.

To the bottom left a gastropod, to the middle you have what looks like lots of small vertebrae probably from a fish?

Ive leant that looks like it has been coloured with pencil, Fine parallel lines. Or else where there is a section that been cut through there are thousands of tiny holes like its been poked with a very sharp pencil. I believe thats the most accurate description I have
I do not see any fossils in this rock unfortunately.
