impressive! you found quite a lot of stuff there. ammonites, vertebrae, fish spines, coral, and that rib. not a whale rib, but something cooler maybe
What could be cooler than a whale rib?
I don’t know, a dinosaur rib? plesiosaur rib? whales are frankly rather uninteresting subjects
plus, any whale bones you would normally find are most likely modern, not fossils
the rib seems way too skinny and small to belong to a whale. I have a baleen whale rib in four pieces. it is as thick as my arm
and it’s seemingly fossilised
So how would I find out for sure? And how do I get to sleep tonight thinking it might be a dinosaur?
I am not the person to ask when it comes to identifying bones properly. give it a day and wait for advice from one of our experts on bones. sorry I can’t be more help
and knock yourself unconscious with a cricket bat to combat the insomnia :p
it might be mammalian, that rib. something about the attachment end’s shape don’t look that reptilian to me. equally interesting of course. there’s more than just dinosaurs in our past
Thanks for your help. Baseball bat will have to do tonight. Amazon will deliver the Cricket Bat by tomorrow. It was a fun hunt for sure. I will return for more.
Did you find all of those in Florida? If so, its highly unlikely any of that is dinosaur material as the Florida geologic maps indicate the rocks are from the Cenozoic (after the extinction of dinosaurs). The ammonites would also not be found in Florida since they went extinct at around the same time as the dinosaurs. Links to geologic maps: http://fcit.usf.edu/florida/maps/pages/8500/f8537/f8537.pdf

Thanks map is helpful. Still curious as to what the rib bone is from. I agree probably mammalian.
I’m also considering a large fish, too. the vertebrae look like they’re from a large ancient fish, and the rib could be linked to their owner
