I built a scale using Legos a few years ago. If I can’t find it I can build a new one. Mega Blocks gave me a huge donation years ago so I am always trying to figure out ways to use them.

I was fortunate enough to get a free one from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. They have several DVDs related to paleontology that can either be streamed or you can request a hard copy for free. If a high school class wanted to take sections of YIF and modify it for 4-8 that could be interesting as an experiment in science communication.

April 20, 2017 at 3:33 am #22377Tynessa MorganParticipant@llundgren, @taorminalepore, @jeanette-pirlo
I do have several verts in my classroom. I now have an articulated human skeleton in my room so I can compare that way as well. I can email the students clips from Your InnerFish where Shubin discusses comparative anatomy.

April 20, 2017 at 3:17 am #22375Tynessa MorganParticipant@llundgren, @jeanette-pirlo, @jbokor, @kate-griener – I have a group of 6 fifth and sixth graders that are all girls so we kind of have a WISE group of our own. I teach it in a way that touches their imaginations. I know that there is controversy surrounded the idea of learning styles, but I still get amazing successes by getting the kids out of their chairs. I would be glad to pilot a program in the Dallas area next school year.
October 27, 2016 at 9:10 pm #14804Tynessa MorganParticipantI need to do comparison pictures for my classroom between the various branches of the elephant family. I use a juvenile dolphin vert in class to compare with humans when I teach anatomy and basic classification.
October 11, 2016 at 3:05 pm #13605Tynessa MorganParticipantThanks! I did a memory type of game for prek, estimation of length for K- 2, a local marine food chain for 3- 5, and 6- 8 got Linnean taxonomy. I feel as though I blistered some brain cells writing.
October 11, 2016 at 2:56 pm #13604Tynessa MorganParticipant@egardner @bmacfadden and the rest of my Florida family, I have to thank you guys for being a huge part of my support system. When I am there I feel as though I have found my people. I was the quote in the article about being stopped at SVP. I never would have been able to attend if it hadn’t been for y’all. The gentleman that stopped me was also African American and I could see that the idea of studying paleontology had never occurred to him. I always tell people that it is the most accessible science because all you need is a bag and a hammer.
My frustration is in outreach. I see so much need and sometimes I just feel discouraged. I can only impact a small number of kids with the PIT Crew and desperately want to expand K12 beyond the zoo science days.
September 1, 2016 at 11:39 pm #11230Tynessa MorganParticipantI need to talk to my boss about 3D printing again. She would probably buy me one. I wasn’t planning on starting with biology so anything helps. I’m also finally working with common core. Do you have the alignment?
September 1, 2016 at 11:24 pm #11229Tynessa MorganParticipantI was going to say the one on the left is real. I would love to see a demonstration of the painting technique. Would I be able to get a similar finish on plaster of paris if I spray it down with a clear coat first?
July 13, 2016 at 3:16 am #6653Tynessa MorganParticipant@rleder I’ve had my head down for a few months trying to plow through so I haven’t touched the microscope. I think that I have finally decided on the scope and sequence for the PIT Crew and the fall is going to be dedicated to more of a curation theme. I love that every time I am at the FMNH I get a different tour. I think that is what really sparked the curation theme. We will be photographing our own finds and then discussing the cataloging aspect.
I’m ruined now! I’m a photo snob!
April 3, 2016 at 11:31 pm #3748Tynessa MorganParticipantHere is the picture from the back of the brochure. I finally found the microscope online:

I can play with it and see what I can do. A friend took me to the Dallas Makerspace last night and I was blown away by the access. There are table mount microscopes in the Creative Arts and Electronics rooms. They also have four 3D printers and a scanner.
December 28, 2015 at 2:46 pm #3132Tynessa MorganParticipantI ended up not getting them a printer for now. I was at the Dallas Makerspace last night and I think that might be my option. UT Arlington is also open to collaborating with us. To up the wow factor I am going to print the meg teeth in glow in the dark filament. Fry’s Electronics has great deals on filament.
December 28, 2015 at 2:41 pm #3131Tynessa MorganParticipantWe were just discussing this on one of the Dallas Paleo Facebook pages a few weeks ago. My clipon is handy because I can take the pic in situ before I work on it in the field.
December 28, 2015 at 2:39 pm #3127Tynessa MorganParticipantMerry Christmas to you too Ronny! We had some organizational changes and I am taking over the youth group. I am planning to put photography on the list. I also have a clip on microscope for the field. I got mine at $5 Below months ago and have never seen another one since. It fits my tablet and phone even with the case on. The images were from the first time that I used it. You can zoom in the camera function on your phone and then attach the clip.

I was looking for something basic.
