Lisa, I noted during the webinar a lot of people wanting to take a field trip to where Don Bissett found his beautiful Calymene sp. Just so people don’t get their hopes up, these trilobites don’t come out of the ground looking like that. They are usually in matrix and professional prep is needed to r…[Read more]

6 years, 7 months ago6 years, 7 months agoThanks, @jkallmeyer! I think I remember @lmccall and @willis-dc wanting to know species names during the webinar, but I’m sure there are other folks who were curious too. The web page you linked, http://www.drydredgers.org/trilobit.htm is an excellent resource. I wonder if there’s another resource that could be linked to that website (or here!), l…[Read more]

7 years, 4 months ago7 years, 4 months ago@jkallmeyer recently informed me of the sad news that myFOSSIL member @robert-marsh passed away on November 30, 2016. Bob participated in the Cincinnati Mini Conference this past June and his love for fossil collecting was highly evident. Due to health complications, he was unable to clamber over the rocks at our various field trip stops, but Bo…[Read more]

7 years, 5 months ago7 years, 5 months ago@willis-dc – Very close! I was told that the mammoth skull fragment pictured had a bite hole from Arctodus simus (North American giant short-faced bear). I believe true cave bears from the Pleistocene lived in Europe. Wouldn’t have wanted to encounter either species, personally!
@lcone – lol at “fossilized mac and cheese!” I’ve never heard…[Read more]

7 years, 5 months ago7 years, 5 months agoFun forum thread, @llundgren! I have insider knowledge about the tooth you posted, so I won’t answer because it feels like cheating 😉
@julie-niederkorn – Very nice jack-o-fossil (lol)! What kind of adhesive did you use to attach the teeth?
Below is my “spooky” fossil. The image is unfortunately fuzzy and lacking anything for scale (s…[Read more]

7 years, 6 months ago7 years, 6 months ago@joyce-drakeford, you bring up a very valid point — it isn’t just professional women in paleontology who experience barriers and discrimination.
I would be interested to learn how amateur/avocational paleontologists have overcome gender-based barriers to their collecting, study, and exposure to paleontology. Thoughts, @spassmore, @cindy-lockner,…[Read more]

7 years, 10 months ago7 years, 10 months ago@willis-dc Hi Diane! I hope you and your husband have made it safely home! Loved seeing you at the conference. If I recall, you found a fairly rare trilobite at one of the field trip locations, right? I’d love to see it up close (I didn’t get a good chance to in the field!). When you get a moment, you should post a picture of it in the fossils…[Read more]

Hi Lisa, I’m not sure how this communication method works, but I got your message re the trilobite, have unpacked the fossils and cleaned most of them, and will take a picture of the trilobite soon and try to post it. (How?) Maybe you could enlighten me as to how this communication system works, too, please! Do lots of people see this, or just the…[Read more]
