Looks a lot like my field area near Antofagasta, Chile with Pseudotoxaster wayensis (a spatangoid) covering the ground like gravel.
@ryan-roney cool!!! Do you have any images from the field? Are spatangoid tests usually colorful (while alive or recently dead)? I never really thought about it but regular echinoids are so vibrant…
Spatangoids are not as colorful as their epifaunal relatives, but there can be pink hues and color patterns.
