Hi all! I thought I would share a recent artist rendition of the whale genus, Ediscetus osbornei, I discovered while SCUBA diving in South Carolina. I was working as a partner for the USGS taking core samples to help identify stratigraphic information and paleo fauna in the coastal waters along the Atlantic Coast. I found and recovered 4 whale skulls in one day including a near complete holotype of this whale along with two other whale species. All skulls reside in the South Carolina State Museum. Ediscetus osbornei had a long protruding snout with long anterior teeth made to snap at and grab prey. The whale lived in the open ocean and anatomy features dictate the whale was designed for speed. The inner ear bones were extremely advanced as well. In the rendition, two whales are hunting scombroid fish (Spanish mackerel).
