My son wanted this to add to his collection. We were told it was a prehistoric animal that would relate to a salmon today. It seems like the sediment is sandstone. What is this fossil of though? #fossil

    • Hello, this looks a lot like an Enchodus jaw. You’re welcome to check the images on Google images.

    • Looks like one of the many fakes that come out of Morocco. often the teeth are real but the rest is faked. The bone here is too flat and oddly textured, and the teeth spacing and order doesn’t make sense. There’s a good writeup at fossil era (I don’t know them as a business, just like the writeup)https://www.fossilera.com/pages/buyer-beware-fake-mosasaurus-jaws

    • I agree with both of these responses. Enchodus teeth are real, but the jaw bones are not.

    • Enchodus is an extinct genus of aulopiform ray-finned fish related to lancetfish and lizardfish. Species of Enchodus flourished during the Late Cretaceous, and there is some evidence that they may have survived to the Paleocene or Eocene.

    • Thank you everyone. I figured the jaw was made for aesthetics. I looked up the Enchodus species and it seems like it is accurate. Thank you for all of your responses.
