After so many years of searching for what these are I have found images of fossil seed cones, sometimes also classified as aggregate fruit. Some also show insect feeding damage. The seed pods are probably legit but the “branches” have probably been added. I think this specimen was supposed to have been cut in half down the length to make two “fossils”. This is often seen where mosasaur teeth are planted into “jaws” . I would love some feedback from our intern.
