this is a belemnite unsure what species though
@smudge-smith Yep! It’s Belemnitella americana.
amazing it hasn’t broken. when I find mine they always break
@smudge-smith These little guys are from a creek site, so often they’re a little more robust as the more fragile specimens are winnowed out.
OK yes. mine are from chalk
yours is amazing… I may post mine in a bit. you don’t happen to know about belemnite species because I don’t know species of mine. no worry if not
Oh yeah! That makes a lot more sense. The creek cuts through a series of glauconitic marls and clays, so the preservation process is a little more friendly to the fossils that chalk would be.
@smudge-smith I bet we can get pretty close. When you post your specimens include as accurate locality data as possible and I’ll get back to you with what the scientific literature says for that area. I’m a mammal guy, so I just ID’d the specimen by what species has been identified by others from the site.
hi @smoran did you say mammal guy? I have an unknown tooth from yarmouth iow and I’m desparate for ID ill send in a bit
@smudge-smith sounds great! I’ll try my best…much more familiar with North American mammals but we’ll be able to get some ID on it.
