7 years, 7 months ago7 years, 7 months ago@vperez, someone asked me an interesting question about this fossil yesterday. I told him it was part of a soft-shelled turtle and he asked me if this piece was a part of the soft-shelled turtle shell. This made me think–is a soft-shelled turtle’s “soft-shell” still a carapace like a regular ol’ turtle? What makes it a soft-shelled turtle?
It still has a bony carapace, but the carapace is leathery and lacks spiny scutes like other turtles. By the way, you know if you use the taxon helper and enter Trionychidae it will auto fill all of the higher taxonomy.
@vperez Thanks for the info! Great to know and to pass along about the bony carapace. Re: taxon helper: I tried! It wasn’t working–I couldn’t even type anything in when I clicked on Taxon Helper. I sent a usersnap, so @egardner and @mjones probably got it. I wonder if it has something to do with my browser? I’m using Safari on a Mac.
@llundgren – Ronny has experienced some funky stuff on Safari as well. I recommend using Chrome if it all possible.
@egardner @llundgren Hmmm that’s no good. I’ve been using Firefox without any issues. Should we notify workshop participants to download chrome/firefox? I want them to use the taxon helper.
@vperez, @llundgren – Good idea. I just emailed them all 🙂
