It’s fun to get the young started. I started at age 3 with a cow skull and never quit 48 years later.

Here are some good books to get started in animal bones and skulls. Animal Skulls by Mark Elbroch. Peterson Field Guide to Mammals (old or new version). Those are easy to find and get the next two are harder to find and more expensive and probably for the more advanced. Mammalian Osteology by Gilbert, and 3 to 5 books by Stanley Olson. The last…[Read more]

The general size and shape looks like an upper limb bone be it a femur or humerus. The shape is not that of a cow or horse. Maybe seal.

Deer cannon bone or toe bone. Think how we walk, flat footed. A deer walks on the tips of it’s toes.

It’s part of the spinal column where they attach together. That’s where the disc would rest.

I would go with fox. If that straight edge was rounded it would be an opossum but straight with to little ridges on the main part says fox.

Ok now thinking fox or animal of that size. I just made a hasty guess on size without checking any references. Should check my hands on collection but they are in the garage because they are not allowed in the house 😁

Then I would say it’s a prehistoric horse toe then. If you are finding ice age mammals in the deposit it could be a small ancient horse. Wish we had deposits like that here. Well we do have ice age gravel deposits by the Wisconsin River but no real places to dig. Also I lived just a few miles from where the Boaz Mastodon was found.

Was this found in water and is it heavy. If so it could be a prehistoric horse toe.

Almost looks like a bear ulna. I will have to look into it a little more. I have one I found in a cave years ago. Broken just like this one.

No way to small for mammoth. I would say more deer size on the lower bend and more cow on the higher.
