Here’s a sketch I made of a mold of a crinoid segment I found. (It’s actually from fossil #048622 if you want to check out the whole fossil.) This fossil was interesting because it showed how the individual crinoid discs fit together. I guess I’ll have to check my work if I come across a good book about crinoid anatomy.

    • @nathan-newell The crinoid volumes in the treatise on Invertebrate Paleontology is what you are looking for . It is a three book set – Part T. You can find these used or if you are a Paleo Society member, you can get a discount on new ones. This will clarify all of your questions.

For example, the central spine is a mineral filling. The living animal had a hole all the way through the stem from top to bottom. The individual stem segments articulate with radial groves and ridges that interlock to prevent the stem from twisting.

Text books on invertebrate paleontology – new or old – will also explain this anatomy.

    • @jkallmeyer Great, thanks for the info! I’ll try to get a used copy of Treatise Part T.
