    • Hi @David-Hanes, I do see that this could be weathering or perhaps an internal mold. Are there records of Discoscaphites in Mississippi?

    • Sam,
Yes, there are such records in the PBDB Navigator site, but the Discoscaphites fossil source formation is around 20 miles west of the Tolar Stevens site, in the Prairie Bluff Fm., lower Member, with a Lithology of sandstone.
      N. F. Sohl and C. F. Koch. (1983) published USGS research describing Discoscaphites specimens found in this Cretaceous formation/zone which arcs 15/20 miles west of Tupelo/New Albany/Booneville/Corinth. MS. This arcing formation is dated to the Late Maastrichtian.
So the Tolar Stevens site (which also dates to the Campanian/Maastrichtian) is 10 miles east of Booneville, towards the TenTom waterway and Fulton, MS. The Coffee Sand matrix is a mix of sand and clay with traces of iron and sulfur.
I agree that someone with a focus on these species of Cretaceous Mollusca could clear up the taxonomic question.
