Coral?
Thanks but the back is smooth . Unless it’s a coal I’m completely unfamiliar with I’m skeptical of coral. I’ll try to post a better pic.
Could be turtle shell.
Yea I’m going with Turtle Shell. I found some larger pieces of turtle shell. The pattern is new to me. Is it underbelly?
I found this post on The Fossil Forum of a Trionyx genus turtle shell that looks similar, it might help- http://www.thefossilforum.com/index.php?/gallery/image/35620-trionyx-turtle-shell-fragments/
Yes thanks went to that site. Looks like a match. Very cool.
That’s way too small and rectangular to be a turtle shell.
It just a fragment. Looks Turtle like so far. It was a fun dig. Thanks everyone!
If it’s a fragment, then the lines are too close together. The patters or turtle shells are like a tic tac toe board
The site above showing the turtle shell had a commenter under it stating that the lines were ripple marks.
But it looks like coral too…
@samantha-ocon or anyone else could you help with this specimen? Thank you!
It could be some kind of tissue fossil, or maybe some kind of bony armor or hide from a reptile.
A scute?
doesn’t seem to be coral. I am going to diagnose it as a vertebrate’s bony plate likely a plate from a turtle shell
