Some kind of coral, possibly tabulate?
I don’t think so because it was in the middle of the wood by a creek
That looking at some more Pictures and photos and reading more about it I think you may be right but I’m just very confused on how that got into the middle of New York State.
It must mean there used to be water, possibly an ocean where it was found
Oh cool! Is it also true that this coral went extinct 245 million years ago

due to continental shift, basically every single area of land currently existing would have at some point been part of the ocean floor. so yes, do not be surprised from finding sea fossils all the way inland. Remember, even the Sahara desert has whale fossils too.
