FOSSIL UPLOAD
First, make sure you have a myFOSSIL account, this is required to upload your fossil information. If you are interested in seeing if your fossil can be used for research purposes, please follow through the following steps. They walk you through the information needed and why it is helpful for other scientists to use it for research questions. Even if the information you have on your fossil is not enough to be used for research purposes it will still benefit the community through educational means and help others identify their fossils. Specimens that have sufficient information will be uploaded to iDigBio and GBIF (Global Biodiversity Information Facility) for public accessibility.
If you have already gone through the stepwise process that explains each piece of data please click through to a summary tab where you can enter in your specimen data on a single page.
Data Quality Information Page
Hey, do you have any information on this specimen, location where collected, genus, etc? If you do we can add it to the online museum. Thanks!
Added what I believe is correct I.D., It’s tough to I.D., let me know what you think.
@samantha-ocon – can you chime in with your foram and Florida knowledge?
I’m thinking this might be a nummulitid based on the shape of the test and internal chambers.
So this is a Nummulites sp. Classification, starting with Kingdom, would be Protista -> Foraminifera -> Globothalamea -> Rotaliida -> Nummulitidae -> Nummulites sp.. This also indicates that the source rock was most likely the Ocala limestone and Eocene in age.
I don’t seem to find a photo of a Nummulites shell like this on the net. Any ideas of where to look?
@delwin-glasner – Most images of Nummulites are of cut specimens so you can see the internal chambers. I was able to find a dissertation and if you go to the very end there is a complete specimen. I used the search feature (ctrl + F) to find all occurrences but if you head to like page 147 and scroll through the images you will see one. Maybe @sama…[Read more]
I have some cross sections, but I’m unsure if I have any good pics of the external test. I can also double check my phone for some pics of when I was picking.
Corrected to Nummulites, Eocene and Ocala
