For whomever is available, I will meet you today (Wednesday) at 11 am (end before noon) out in the museum plaza downstairs from the reception desk. We will either stay outside, or find a room to meet. Sorry for the confusion. Hope to see some/most of you then, Bruce

    Paleo-tutorial meeting update

There is a museum grad student lunch now scheduled for noon this Wednesday (to talk about the Museum Ed candidates). Lets meet, therefore from 11 to noon (place TBD) instead of our normal time. That will give you the opportunity to talk about things in general, including thoughts about the RFP, if you are interested. See you then, hopefully. Bruce

Confirming our Paleo-Tutorial next Tuesday, regular time. Please see attached grant opportunity form the FOSSIL project, which we can discuss next week, if you are interested.

    Request for Proposals

    FOSSIL Project—up to $25,000

The FOSSIL Project solicits proposals that promote the mission and activities of this NSF funded project. We are particularly interested in team proposals that promote the myFOSSIL app and/or eMuseum and meaningfully engage our target audiences (professionals, amateurs, K-12 teachers, or citizen scientists). The proposed work must be completed before 15 August 2019. Budgets are primarily intended to fund participant support (travel, lodging, and registration), although some funds (up to $1,000) are available for materials and supplies. UF students and postdocs in paleontology and education are eligible to apply. Applicants must commit to lead and manage the program, including doing travel paperwork and other arrangements. Funding recipients must join myFOSSIL and utilize the website and/or app to promote and share updates on their project.

The proposal will include (single spaced, 12-point font):

    1. Cover page (1 page total)

    Title

    Project team

    Project Summary

    1. Project Description (1-3 pages)

Including goals, plan of activities, project management, outcomes and deliverables,

    dissemination plan, and evaluation

    1. Detailed budget and justification (1 page)
    2. Timeline for implementation (1 page)

Proposals must be received at ([email protected]) by 15 March 2019

Tomorrow (2/13) we will have our P-T at the regular time, 11:45. I need to find out who has not yet received the Mitchell Hope Award from the SW Florida Fossil Society. To be eligible, you cannot have received the award before. Top priority is for a UF student doing research on Florida fossils.

I will also talk with you about a funding opportunity from the FOSSIL project.

Next week I will connect via SKYPE. Jeanette has a key to room 521. Regular (not early) time.

Please note that we will be interviewing candidates for the museum ed faculty position in February. Given all of your interests, it is really important that you participate and make your voices heard.  There will be a grad student pizza lunch for each. Adania is on the search committee.

    Julie Bokor 15-16 February

    Katie Stofer 18-19 February

    Megan Ennes 21-22 February

    Jessica Roberts 25-26 February

It will not only be interesting to meet them, but also for each of you to better understand the interview process. Perhaps we can put this on the agenda for discussion at our lab meeting next week.

We will meet tomorrow at 9:35 in the Director’s Conference Room in Dickinson. Please open this up to other graduate students.

Feb 6th–I will connect via SKYPE.

Feb 20th is problematic for me for the 2nd half of the period, BUT you can meet as a group to discuss CVs at 9:35 (and I can stay to 9:50). If this makes sense, then I will arrange for a room. Please promote this to other graduate students.

Jen and Rachel will lead a discussion about Twitter. Thanks, Bruce

Hi Paul–Thanks for your Forum post. I am sorry that it has taken me a few days to respond.

I always like to learn about new discoveries of fossil horses. Yes, the tooth that you found is of Equus. It is an upper molar in moderate wear, meaning that it was from an advanced adult (not juvenile or senior citizen).

Fossil Equus teeth are not surprizing for North Carolina, but any new discovery adds to our knowledge base. If you have photos of it with a ruler (for scale) and upload it to our FOSSILS gallery, it will contribute new knowledge to science through this occurrence. Do you know if other fossil horses, or other Ice Age mammals have been found at the same locality?  This would be interesting as well.

I really appreciate your interest in this fossil and wanting to connect with us via this forum!  I’d be happy to correspond with you more about this.

Andy Zimmerman, UF geology prof (and Moonshot participant) has developed a very successful GeoGators outreach program. He needs someone to present as indicated below. Anyone available to help? If so, let me and Andy ([email protected]) ASAP, thanks–Bruce.

    *******

Hi All – I have a request for geology presentations for two events [Bruce–the other one has been filled], both on Wednesday morning:

    • 1/30/19 – Newberry Elementary – Education Fair – 3rd Grade – 8:00-12:30

As always, These are very fun, require no prior experience, and I will provide you with everything you need.

Please let me know if you can do at least a 2 hour time slot on either of these. It would be great if you and a geo-buddy can take one of these events together

    Thanks – Andy

So then, it seems like we can meet from 11:45 until 12:35 on Wednesdays?  If not one responds to the contrary, then we will do this. I will find a room.

OK, send me any times that you cannot make a lab meeting on Wednesday. We will not meet tomorrow because not everyone is available.

    • I would prefer the afternoon over the morning because I have time scheduled with undergrads in the lab but if morning works better for everyone else I can try to reschedule them.

    • I’m no longer officially signed up, but would still like to join if that’s okay? I could meet anytime Wednesdays except ~1 – 1:30 pm.

    • If our lab meeting is scheduled before 1:00pm it works for me. I TA on wednesdays at 3:00 so I would like some time to prep.

    • I should be free anytime on Wednesdays

Yes, if we can find a time.

Could we meet at 11:45 on Thursday, 10 January. OR

Could we meet at 12:45 on Thursday, 10 January?

If so, I’ll find a place. Only respond if you cannot make either (both) of these.
