5 years, 6 months ago5 years, 6 months agoReally beautiful specimen, @joseph-dumont. I agree that it looks like a post-mortem trace – echinoids and other echinoderms are pretty quick to start healing and I don’t see any new growth around the trace.

I checked both the collections here at the Florida Museum and the Paleobiology Database and did not find anything on fruits and seeds from the Brule of Nebraska. If so, this is the raphe, a remnant of vasculature between the ovule and ovary. Also, do you see any hilar or micropilar scars? These would appear as dots, circles or even ellipses.
