4 years, 5 months ago4 years, 5 months agoMy first fossil. Found on the southernmost point in Key West. I think it’s a post-mesozoic coral reef (20-65 million years). But if anyone has more info please comment. #fossil
This does appear to be a scleractinian coral – which are the more modern group of corals, @Nicholas-Bilotta. Macrostrat will help us nail down the age: https://macrostrat.org/map/#/z=1.5/x=16/y=23/bedrock/lines/
@samantha-ocon thank you very much! Definitely very helpful, just downloaded the Rockd app
Rockd is the best! Me + my partner use it out in the field all the time when we look for outcrops.
If fossil it probably came from either the Key Largo Limestone or Tamiami Oolite. Both are young. They are Pleistocene and range from 125,000 to 100,000 years old.
It is possible that it’s fossil – just based on the apparent weathering on the edges of the corallites.
Yes, it is fossil.
Thanks for the info @mackenzie-Smith I’m still very excited about finding it. Hope to find another… 650x older
