Corals make their skeletons of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) but this fossil is preserved as silica (SiO2). Hi, all! That sounds like a fantastic find! Would you be able to take any preliminary photos with Brenda? Are there any brachioles on the flattened side? I’ve always wondered if they would be different from the other four sides…
-
@jbauer I know I can take cell phone photos fairly easily but I don’t know if I can get Brenda into the pictures as well 🙂 These are mostly fragmentary so they won’t look too good. There is one that is better than the rest although still not perfect. What level of photo are you wanting? I’m also not sure what you mean by the flattened side. – Jack

Hi, Jack – Maybe you are thinking of Elaeacrinus? Eleutherocrinus has one side that is completely flat with a strangely small petaloid ambulacrum. I’ll email you picture of it. I’ll add it to my list that there is a specimen with brachioles there. Maybe Colin and I can make a trip to the CMC this semester!

It was in with all of the unidentified crinoids so no one knew it was there. It is actually 18 mostly partial specimens of Eleutherocrinus from the Devonian of Retsof, NY. The cool thing is, the brachioles are preserved. Le…[Read more]
