  • The USGS provides the Geological Map Database viewable in web browsers (and a separate map viewer for the Geological Atlas of Texas).  It would be great to have a smart phone app to pull in the maps from their databases, and show where you are using the phone’s GPS.  The USGS Geological Map Database has maps of all scales, including surgical geology maps for fans of the Pleistocene.

  • An app like Bruce discusses would take advantage of two of the great features of smart phones – built-in cameras and GPS.  But some collectors may not want to share their locations.  To give them a bit of secrecy, the database could store the complete latitude / longitude for their viewing only (would require account set up), but then truncate the latitude / longitude to 1/1000 degree for other users.  That would make each site about a 100 m circle.  Storage of uploaded photos will require a lot of storage space, but they could also be uploaded to free photo sharing sites.  Scale is important in the photos, and I have always wondered why the scale couldn’t be determined automatically from the camera’s focusing system.
