@matt-griffin, off the top of my head I don’t know any man-made object that looks quite like this (but it certainly could be one) but it is obviously made of or rich in iron, I wonder if it might be a limonite psuedomorph. In any case it is not a fossil.
Neat find! I agree with Mason – looks to be iron rich. Rocks in my area are often iron rich and I have seen some amazing shapes & vivid colors. Consider posting on mindat https://www.mindat.org/discuss.php
I posted this on mindat like you suggested. It was quite the conversation piece. They seam to think that it is a caltrop. They would spread them on the road and the horses would step on them and bruise their feet and come up lame .
