4 years, 3 months ago4 years, 3 months agoHi @Kevin-Kelly. It appears this specimen is missing geochronology data and that the genus and specific epithet are mismatched.
-
See that too, fixed.
-
Also the taxon wizard doesn’t contain Carcharodon planus, I can only select to the level of Carcharodon, then forced to type planus in the species field manually. Is there a way to add Carcharodon planus to the taxon wizard?

-
Hi @Samantha-Ocon @bill-heim @vperez– I contacted PBDB and they said in order to use Carcharodon planus as the current name, they’d need to link the name in the database to a published reference with that opinion. They said from a quick search it appeared that the taxonomy of Isurus/Carcharodon/Cosmopolitodus is unsettled, but if you can send me a…[Read more]

4 years, 3 months ago4 years, 3 months agoHi, @Kevin-Kelly! @Bill-Heim or @VPerez should be able to confirm this ID for you!
-
Looks similar to the Carcharhinus limbatus @Bill-Heim ID’d last week (https://www.myfossil.org/dwc-specimen/63582/)
-
Very interesting specimen in that it is a transitional form. Modern upper C. limbatus have fine serrations on the cusp. Earlier (prior to Miocene) Carcharhinids often have an unserrated cusps. This tooth has partial and incomplete serrations. New species’ names have often be determined on such minor details.
-
Whoa. Are you saying we may have found something new? How is that confirmed?
-
We would need further specimens and then check all of the literature which for that species is probably very extensive. And after all of this it would have a good likely hood of being rejected as too similar to the modern species.
-
Specimens and literature. On it.

Most like Carcharodon hastalis lower posterior. Isurus oxyrinchus is another possibility as laterals and posteriors appear very similar. I recommend a quick tip (10-15 seconds) in a sonic jewelry cleaner. It will take off the dirt and crud making the teeth appear much better and revealing hidden features. Mild soap and a tooth brush will also…[Read more]

Hard to say for sure since it’s broken, but looks like Physogaleus contortus.
-
Has serrations, but the image angle and the damage make it hard to ID. Possible Physogaleus symphyseal tooth but I am not anything close to sure.
-
-
Hi @Kevin-Kelly, I think the best thing to do here is to change the taxonomy to reflect Physogaleus sp.
-
Same issue here, selecting “Physogaleus contortus” w/taxon wizard autopopulates the info for “Galeocerdo contortus”
-
I think our best bet is to manually type it in in these situations. Thanks for letting me know about this problem!
