1 year, 2 months ago1 year, 2 months ago@drsukhendu-mukhopadhyay the rocks in the area yu found this fossil are not conducive to bearing fossils unfortunately. This is likely a modern shell!

1 year, 2 months ago1 year, 2 months ago@drsukhendu-mukhopadhyay This is a lovely tooth from a shark of the genus Carcharhinus! As it seems to have been washed in from offshore and is a long-lived genus, it is hard to say how old the tooth is

3 years, 2 months ago3 years, 2 months ago@drsukhendu-mukhopadhyay It’s easier to tell from a cross section as opposed to a longitudinal section. But to me it looks more bone-like.

3 years, 8 months ago3 years, 8 months agoNo problem, @drsukhendu-mukhopadhyay! Are you using a mobile device or a desktop? To edit the specimen data, you must be on a desktop computer and navigate to the specimen page, located at this URL: https://www.myfossil.org/dwc-specimen/60602/. There, you should be able to edit the blanks on the specimen page. Let me know if you have any further issues!

3 years, 8 months ago3 years, 8 months agoI agree that this looks very similar to a fossiliferous limestone, @drsukhendu-mukhopadhyay. Do you know what geological unit this was found in? If not, https://macrostrat.org/map/#/z=1.5/x=16/y=23/bedrock/lines/ would be very useful! I am not sure, however, if we can keep it in the eMuseum as it is not a singular specimen, but rather a collection…[Read more]

3 years, 8 months ago3 years, 8 months agoHi, @drsukhendu-mukhopadhyay, could you post more photos of this specimen? These do look somewhat like intersected bivalves but it could also be a non-biotic rock.

3 years, 9 months ago3 years, 9 months agoHello @drsukhendu-mukhopadhyay , you will still need to add a scalebar to your photos for us to mark it as research grade. I think the identification shouldn’t go beyond the genus Carcharhinus for this specimen. There are too many Carcharhinus species with similar teeth to be certain.

3 years, 9 months ago3 years, 9 months agoVery cool finds! @drsukhendu-mukhopadhyay in order for a post to be curated, only one specimen can be represented in the post! If you could upload these seperately @vperez or @bill-heim can help with ID!

4 years, 8 months ago4 years, 8 months ago@jbauer@drsukhendu-mukhopadhyay I’m still debating if it’s wood or not. The second picture is throwing me off because of the extra mineralization on the side. But sometimes if a tree is buried in the ocean or buried by tsunami we do get salt crystals that disrupt the internal structure.

4 years, 8 months ago4 years, 8 months ago@jbauer@drsukhendu-mukhopadhyay There are too many concentric laminations for it to be wood. Plus the rings are irregular. Could be a stromatolite though but not plant.
