8 years ago8 years agoHey all,
It might be a good idea to have a spot to share upcoming meetings and venues where we can collaborate in person.
For example, SEGSA or other regional GSA meetings, as well as meetings like PaleoFest and even SVP. It’d be good to know who is going where, and when.
Thoughts?

8 years, 1 month ago8 years, 1 month agoHi everyone,
This paper collects some of the best resources online for 3D fossil scans, and details a bit of the rationale behind the process of 3D printing in STEM.

As a caveat I’d recommend using Agisoft (http://www.agisoft.com/) instead of 123Dcatch for scanning, as recommended,…[Read more]

8 years, 1 month ago8 years, 1 month agoLove the photos, guys!
Here are a couple of my faves:
1. My first field experience in 2001, actually an archaeological dig looking at middens in Jackson Hole, Wyoming for evidence of bison bone. I was still in high school, it was a huge leap for me outside of my comfort zone, but I ended up loving it!
2. I was a GeoCorps intern at Fossil Butte…[Read more]

8 years, 2 months ago8 years, 2 months ago@bmacfadden Hi Bruce, thanks, I’m glad your lesson plans are spreading! So far the lesson has been really engaging for this one student – and I’m hoping to implement it later on this Spring semester with a whole 11th grade advanced biology high school class.
Will keep the board posted on how that goes; I think Julie is going to send some of the…[Read more]

8 years, 2 months ago8 years, 2 months agoOh – I was using the term “open access” to refer more specifically to open access (non-paywall, with downloadable data) journal articles that have links to .stl files and other 3D printables. Examples of journals that are open access include PeerJ and PLOS.
Thingiverse and other online venues also provide access to these sorts of 3D printable…[Read more]

8 years, 2 months ago8 years, 2 months agoLisa, it was totally amazing, the skull wasn’t 100% anatomically wonderful (the jaws didn’t articulate) but the surface was lifted straight from the accurate, open access digital file, uploaded by Andy Farke’s students at the Webb Schools. The student took the skull back home with him, but he was able to use it to take physical measurements of the…[Read more]

8 years, 2 months ago8 years, 2 months ago@rleder Hey Ronny,
Yeah but I don’t have any of them, and the industry photos are business confidential until released in an EIR or other final environmental report.
I did find the website for the tracks, though! I photographed almost all of these specimens.

8 years, 2 months ago8 years, 2 months agoHi Ronny (@rleder), most of what I’ve digitized are either specimens under an NSF grant for CU-Boulder and CU-Denver (all tracks), or specimens I’ve photographed for industry purposes (mostly shells and other non-trace fossils). They aren’t available online, unfortunately, though I thought the grant photos were going to be a part of a website.…[Read more]
