Greetings @soroush-welayati ! I believe you’re specimen is more mineral than animal. I don’t see any diagnostic features that would suggest an organic composition.

Thank you sir @matthew-gramling for your reaction.
Yes, and it’s hard just like a stone.

Greetings @samantha-ocon and @mackenzie-ross-2!!! I was wondering if it was possible to update the geological context information for this specimen. As a research grade specimen, I can’t update it at the moment. Inputting Telychian into the geochronology wizard and adding Red Mountain Formation and Ruffner Member should update the specimen info.
-
Hey, @Matthew-Gramling; I’ll unlock it for you!

@mackenzie-ross-2 Can I request an edit for this specimen I posted? I have since narrowed the geochronology information down to Silurian and Red Mountain Formation. Most likely Aeronian or Telychian in Age.

Hi, @Matthew-Gramling! Do you know what rock unit this came from? If not, https://macrostrat.org/ is a really useful tool.
-
Greetings @samantha-ocon! That’s a very good question which I’ve struggled with over the past several months. Accordingto Rockd, the Favosites specimen originate from an area represented by the Silurian Red Mountain Formation. But, there is considerable float material around the collection site . Thus, it’s difficult determine. The surrounding…[Read more]

My best estimation is that it’s from the Chickamauga Group or some shale member of the Red Mountain.

Hi, @Matthew-Gramling, do you have any clearer photos of the surface? I can’t really see the characteristic honeycomb structure of Favosites in these images. Thanks!

Hi @Matthew-Gramling. I’m not sure I can see any favosites-like features. Can you add a photo of the details you used to ID it?

Hi, @Matthew-Gramling, would you be able to upload more photos of this specimen with a higher resolution? It would be useful to see the face of the rock more clearly.

Hi, @Matthew-Gramling. Would you be interested in improving the data associated with this specimen? Filling out the rest of the taxonomy based on this: https://paleobiodb.org/classic/checkTaxonInfo?taxon_no=4880&is_real_user=1 would be a good start.

Hi, @Matthew-Gramling, do you know what geological unit these came from?
-
Not with certainty. All the specimens from Walker County I have posted are from one collection site. Rockd has the area marked as Silurian Red Mountain Formation. The problem with the site is that there is a lot of erosion and float from other formations.
-
The matrix is a blue-gray fissile shale, which I initially thought was limestone. But, upon conducting an acid test no reaction with any carbonate occured.
-
Also, I should mention that all the photos posted here are a single tabulate coral specimen. The last is an external mold of the fossil.
