Could some of you share your criteria for what you keep and what you discard; and how you discard of it?
After my first fossil trip I ended up with many fragments, half of me wants to keep them all and say each one is special because its 300 million…[Read more]

7 years, 4 months ago7 years, 4 months ago@jkallmeyer recently informed me of the sad news that myFOSSIL member @robert-marsh passed away on November 30, 2016. Bob participated in the Cincinnati Mini Conference this past June and his love for fossil collecting was highly evident. Due to health complications, he was unable to clamber over the rocks at our various field trip stops, but Bo…[Read more]

And holy smokes, Bill, your labeling of tiny specimens is INCREDIBLE!! Hard work certainly does pay off – what a labor intensive but useful method! @rleder, have you ever employed methods like Bill describes?

George,
Your system is very good. At this point in my life, I’d hate to start numbering each of my discrete specimens since the numbers are overwhelming. This would be good for someone with fewer fossils like a newer collector to get started doing the right way with their collection.
I wanted to relate w…[Read more]

7 years, 6 months ago7 years, 6 months agoDefinitely Vinlandostrophia–the three costa in the pedicle sulcus and three costa on the brachial fold give it away, right? Thanks to the Dry Dredgers’ website for the great photos that helped with the ID (@bheimbrock, @jkallmeyer, & John Tate!). http://drydredgers.org/brachplaty.htm

Yes, and it looks like Vinlandostrophia ponderosa. Other species of Vinlandostrophia have different numbers of weak and strong plications. I can’t stress enough, though, that when identifying a fossil, particularly from photos, knowing the geographic location and site details are very important to correct identification. But then, I think I’m…[Read more]
