3 years, 8 months ago3 years, 8 months ago@chase-grim so looking at macrostrat.org it looks like that area is Ordovician-Silurian in age meaning it not likely a plant since we don’t see a lot of land plants until the Devonian. My guess would be an animal (or animal colony) like graptolite, bryozoan or even some sort of echinoderm since they too can have branching appendages. I’m going to…[Read more]

4 years, 9 months ago4 years, 9 months agoHi, @joyce-drakeford
It would be excellent if you would be the lead coordinator. I think you will still need to recruit several volunteers to help manage the content. So, we have an ad going out in the next Dry Dredgers bulletin – thanks to @bheimbrock – and we have a social media announcement for volunteers that is going out on Monday.…[Read more]

4 years, 9 months ago4 years, 9 months agoAfter some emails with @bheimbrock & @jkallmeyer here is a distilled version of what we think would be needed for the newsletter:
- A coordinator to moderate and keep track of articles, other volunteers, coordinate with social media volunteers etc.
- Someone who uploads the posts to the website, will require some WordPress familiarity

4 years, 9 months ago4 years, 9 months agoSorry we were slow on this @bheimbrock! Tagging can be tricky depending on when the user joined. Us older member have just our first initial and our last name whereas everyone else is hyphenated. My go to is to start by typing in the first name and if the dropdown doesn’t have the user I’m looking for I try the first initial or search under the…[Read more]

@bheimbrock– yes, we understand everyone is strapped for time. To be frank, the newsletter took up a lot of time – mostly concerning emailing people requesting them to write for us (and then reminding and reminding). But the way we had been running the newsletter can certainly change depending on the motivations and time of people…[Read more]

4 years, 9 months ago4 years, 9 months ago@matthew-croxton – I think this may be Protaraea – maybe @bheimbrock could confirm since my Cincinnatian knowledge is a bit dusty at this point.

As I always say, location information is critical to correctly identifying a fossil specimen. It this specimen was found on a Richmondian Stage formation in the Cincinnati Arch, then it’s probably Protaraea richmondensis.
-
It was indeed in the Cincinnati Arch, although I’m hazy on which locality. Apologies for not being able to provide more specific information.

5 years, 4 months ago5 years, 4 months ago@bheimbrock – I used this book constantly during my MS! It’s such a great resource. When I was posting I tried looking it up online, there is someone selling them on amazon but I would want the money to go to CMC. I would buy a new edition in a heart beat! I’m sure it will eventually happen but who knows when.

5 years, 8 months ago5 years, 8 months agoI only know of one species of Orthonybyoceras – O. dyeri. In the same family is Treptoceras duseri. I’m not entirely sure how to best distinguish between them and I think they both can be found in the Grant Lake Fm. Any advice from other Ordovician folks? @jkallmeyer@kyle-hartshorn@bheimbrock
-
My apologies for not replying sooner. No reply for me means “I don’t know”. At times, these two were thought to be synonymous. I think that Treptoceras is more common and has a wider range. I’ll have to look dig into some siphuncle photos and see if I can tell the difference. Thanks for asking! @jbauer @matthew-croxton

7 years, 1 month ago7 years, 1 month agoHi, @marie-vahue! You might want to chat with @bheimbrock, as he has an excellent system for organizing and curating his fossil collection. In terms of a citizen science project, I wonder if you might want to get in contact with @dkrisher as he’s working on a database project for the Devonian fossils of Western NY.

Hi @marie-vahue! You should first read the description of my methods in the “Curation of Curation of Personal Collections” topic. Here’s the URL – http://www.myfossil.org/forums/topic/curation-of-personal-collections-2/
