6 days, 15 hours ago6 days, 15 hours agoThis is a rock I found on a hill where I usually find imprints of trees and plants but this didn’t look like a tree so I kind of need help. It’s hollow so I honestly have no idea.
-
My first thought was that it could be a tip off a fulgerite, but images do not match. If the hole is precisely down the middle I’d suggest it’s an artifact. If the hole is more to the side and not regular, you might want to check on coprolites? This one is fascinating.
-
I justchad another look. Well if you type in coprolite bullets (I kid you not!) there are some interesting looking samples, especially amongst shark and crocodile coprolites.
-
Thank you so so much l will look into it

Your last photo does show specimens. I’m wondering if they are perhaps oyster or worn bivalves? They do not look like ammonites.
-
I checked again. I think you should look at comparable photos of oysters and perhaps also some clamshells. Please do let us know what you have found out.
-
I believe I reach an impasse. Is it possible that they are Foraminiferans, like Nummulites or Sponges in this case Actinostroma?

You should check your specimens against the Pliensbachian ammonites shown on Google. They are quite worn, but there should be enough detail left for you to identify at least to Genus. They look wonderful
-
Been reading that the occurrence of ammonites, are rare at this site. So this was a great found and from what I’ve been inquiring, they might be Dayiceras.

Photo 1, Looks like some nautiloid and possibly a Turritella. 2.Lovely piece of branching coral. 3. Turritella, a possible bivalve on the right. 4. Perhaps compare to Bryozoans. This is a very tightly packed fossil. 5. Compare to pictures of branching bryozoans. A really grand collection.

Would love to go fossil exploring with you Lynette-luff, I would learn so much! Thank you

I am jealous of your fossil search places. I live in South Africa. Owing to a back problem I can’t walk that far anymore. I’m a teacher and taught at a school which had fossils. I then had Dinocamps for close on 30 years at least once per term. It was great fun and my South African kiddies enjoyed learning about our local fossils. I enjoy…[Read more]

I find myself very lucky, Portugal is marvelous for fossil exploration!
Been twice at the Cape Province, and all I can say is that South Africa is a beautiful Country, nature wise. I believe theres a few limits for owning fossils, which is that…

Though very worn it looks like you may have a rib. There looks to be other pieces of bone surrounding your find. Awesome.
-
Really? I never would have imagined. There are some other, I guess rib bones, near this one. Could it be relatively recent or is there no way of knowing by a photo?
-
I believe those are proper fossils. If you touch these fossils they will probably feel cold. Even though they are stone, you are able to see the texture of the bone. It would be difficult to collect the fossil in “one” piece. Maybe a jacket of plaster of Paris could keep it together. I would like to advise leaving it in situ is you are not well…[Read more]

I’m going to leave them as is. I don’t have experience removing anything from the ground that isn’t just laying around. There is a new neighborhood on the way and I am afraid things like this will be lost. Can or should I notify anyone?

I believe you are right. They are beautiful specimens. I think you should compare your specimens with pictures of rugose and tabulate coral fossils on Google images. You are going to find most of your answers there.

@lynette-luff awesome!! Thank you so so much-I will continue my research!

You have a serious piece of bone fossil there. If it is a large specimen it could be almost any mammal. More detail is needed.
-
thank you for your input this piece is a little longer than a regular cigarette lighter and diameter is the size of a small pill bottle and it’s hollow all the way through and seems to be somewhat polished like natural polish real smooth texture

Those marks could be worm tunnels. Have a look at comparable images?
