You got a piece of what looks like fossiliferous limestone. The large corkscrew is an Archimedes. And you have ton of other bryozoa fragments too.

The small donut shaped impressions are external molds of crinoid mounts.

    • Profile picture of Matthew Gramling
Matthew Gramling replied 1 year ago

So, I would say you have a piece of fossiliferous limestone composed of crinoid mounts, bryozoans, and the bryozoa Archimedes.

I’d assume this is from a Carboniferous strata too.

It does look like the inside of a tree, but I think this is another pair of brachiopods.

The spirals might be Archimedes? Some of the brachiopods in this pic might help: https://pin.it/150dngL the source is from here: http://geologycafe.com/class/chapter15.html

@jbauer Kentucky brachiopod here! Can you narrow down the ID?

    • Profile picture of Jennifer Bauer
Jennifer Bauer replied 1 year ago

@holly-latta do you have any other images? It certainly looks like a brachiopod! The area you wrote in suggests Mississippian in age, did you find it in Crofton or is that the geo-tag from the image?

@holly-latta – if you could try taking an image from the point facing the upper right hand corner of the current image? I think it’s an orthid brachiopod
