4 years ago4 years agoThank you @samantha-ocon and @jeanette-pirlo! I have been looking at unguals of thescelosaurs and pachycephalosaurs from the Hell Creek Formation. I believe this specimen is a thescelosaur (or similar small ornithopod) ungual.

4 years ago4 years agoThese are great photos! Thank you so much, @Mariela-Pajuelo! Could you update the classification to reflect @Jeanette-Pirlo‘s ID? It would be Kingdom -> Animalia, Phylum -> Chordata, Class -> Sirenia.

4 years ago4 years ago@Mariela-Pajuelo, sorry for the late response! I think this is an alligator tooth. @jeanette-pirlo would be able to confirm.
-
I’m not convinced that it’s gator based on the root but @smoran may have more insight.

4 years, 1 month ago4 years, 1 month agoHi Matthew! I’m gonna tag in @SMoran, @sholte, and @jeanette-pirlo since I’m not too great with verts.

This looks like a claw or hoof, but i am not up to date with my Cretaceous taxa.

There is also a possibility that it is an ornithomimid claw.
-
Thank you, @Matthew-Gramling. As you probably know by now, my strength is not vertebrates. I’m going to see if I can find a dinosaur person to confirm that ID.

No worries! Thank you again for the help!

4 years, 1 month ago4 years, 1 month agoHi, @mariela-pajuelo. Do you have any clearer photos? I can’t seem to make this out at all. You can add photos to a single specimen by navigating to the specimen page on a desktop: https://www.myfossil.org/dwc-specimen/67012 and clicking “View Media” under the single photo. I would add the other photo you uploaded to this specimen and delete the…[Read more]

Thanks! Uploaded better photos now (I think…).

This looks like a sirenian tooth (manatee or dugong). When things go back to normal, you should definitely bring it by the collections for Richard to fully ID @mariela-pajuelo Great find!
-
I agree. It looks just like one I found years ago in a phosphate mine in Brewster, FL.

4 years, 1 month ago4 years, 1 month agoHi @Matthew-Gramling! This looks like a toe bone or a turtle scute? I’m not super sure, so I’ll tag in @jeanette-pirlo.
-
Thank you @samantha-ocon! I look forward to the feedback!
-
HI @matthew-gramling and @samantha-ocon this does not look like a turtle scute. It looks more like a vertebra, but i do not know much about the Cretaceous fossil record. But i can certainly confirm that this is not a turtle scute.

Thank you @jeanette-pirlo! I appreciate the help!!!!

4 years, 1 month ago4 years, 1 month ago@jeanette-pirlo you are correct. This is a dorsal spine of fish. These are commonly referred to as tilly bones or hyperostotic bones. Unfortunately, I can’t tell you what kind of fish.
