4 years, 1 month ago4 years, 1 month agoAs Mackenzie points out it is not Acropora. Florida Geological Survey Bulletin No. 56 describes the fossil corals of the Tampa Formation (latest geology pointed out by Michael Z.). https://ufdc.ufl.edu/UF00000252/00001/pdf. It looks from a distance to be Goniopora. A much closer pic will be needed to identify to species.

4 years, 2 months ago4 years, 2 months agoLittorinimorpha is the correct order for Cypraeidae however the shell above is not Cypraeidae. I’ll have to do some research for the correct Genus/species.

5 years, 8 months ago5 years, 8 months agoThey could be fossil but SC beach finds are not my expertise. I can however confirm that Mercenariais found both in the James City and Waccamaw Formations.

6 years, 6 months ago6 years, 6 months agoI looked before I posted but my three companions are not on myFossil. What the pictures don’t tell is the more than one mile hike in to the new piles and the trip out loaded down with shell and coral. Fortunately the wagon helped.

Hi, @michael-reagin – is this specimen reposited in a museum collection? I noticed a string that looked like a museum identifier in the image. I have been including information such as this in the new Field Notes section so people know that it is formally stored somewhere rather than in your personal collection.
Also, we now have an entry box…[Read more]
