Hi @rebecca-barnett. For wood, it’s best to image what would give you a cross section so in this case the top or bottom. However, I think this is a sedimentary rock.

Taking a wild guess I’d say the specimen is of the order Medullosales
, but Mackenzie will certainly know more. @rebecca-barnett Could provide the a more precise location of where the specime was found like county or town? It will help with the geochronology data, and thus aid in obtaining an ID

@rebecca-barnett, @Jim-barkley is correct, it is Pecopteris. I would hold off on putting it in an order though since Pecopteris is a morphogenus and does not belong to a any one group. It is a convergent form. @matthew-gramling is correct in that it could belong to Medullosales however it could also belong to Marattiales.

Hi @rebecca-barnett and @smudge-smith. Where was this collected? Having the site can help narrow the ID because it can tell us what literature to look into if it has already been published. From a quick glance it looks like conifer leaves on a branch like @a-trilobite suggested.

This is a very cool concretion @rebecca-barnett. Unfortunately, the photos are too blurry for me to tell if there are any fossils in it! If you could update this post with clearer photos (with a scale) and the location information that would be useful for ID!

I have found very similar specimens where I live. I thought it was a dinosaur exoskeleton fossil but only an uneducated guess. Please let me know if you have it conclusively identified.

They appear to be mud rocks that were used in sling shots for hunting and fighting most likely by Indian tribes. If you look closely there might by etchings on them that are still left that will tell whom the owner was so they could go back and get their weapons. I would do a little research and find out what tribes lives along the banks of that…[Read more]
