Eleanor Gardner replied to the topic Open Access Papers Overview in the forum Open Access Papers 6 years, 6 months ago
6 years, 6 months ago6 years, 6 months agoMy go-to’s are PLOS ONE and Palaeontologia Electronica (side note: I feel like the journal should officially change the name, as so many people add an extra “c” at the end of Palaeontologia – it is a super common error!).
When I taught geology at the university level, I frequently incorporated peer-reviewed publications into assignments. I’m cur…[Read more]

Thanks – great article.

Excellent! The story says Llyod Gunther gave thousands of specimens to KU. @egardner have you seen any of his other fossils?
-
@llundgren – Not that I’m aware of, but we have 10.2 million specimens spread across 7 buildings on campus sooooo… one day, I’m sure! lol
A quick search on “Gunther” in the invert paleo database shows many donated by Lloyd and his family: https://collections.biodiversity.ku.edu/KUInvertPaleo/

6 years, 6 months ago6 years, 6 months agoGreat newsletter this time around! Kudos to @sellis and @sadie-mills for putting it together 😉 And I was so excited to read about @richard-bex, @mackenzie-smith, and @michael-le joining the FOSSIL team! Keep up the awesome work, y’all! Looking forward to seeing some of you at GSA 2017 🙂

Thanks Eleanor! @george-phillips contributed a really great article! Thanks for suggesting him. He had other great content to add about fossil hunting with kids, but sadly we just couldn’t include it all. @bdunckel and I both think a trip to the Australian Outback sounds amazing and I hope other readers do as well. Please continue to suggest…[Read more]

Thank you all for covering us! I appreciate the interest in the program here. Next year (Aug 2018) MMNS Paleontology will be 40 years old, so we’re looking to do something special, probably around Nat’l Fossil Day. Perhaps have a pro-am conference, although I’ll need to discuss it with admin first. I’d be open to ideas, if either of you have any.…[Read more]

6 years, 6 months ago6 years, 6 months agoAs @kcrippen noted, Max Jones (@mjones) and Eric Poirier (@epoirier) are the external web developers and they should be able to give you some more information about the AC wizard design. To my knowledge, AC data capabilities exist but are not currently being utilized — that will be implemented in the future with a redesign of the Fossil…[Read more]

Eleanor Gardner replied to the topic FOSSIL Webinar Series in the forum Upcoming Opportunities 6 years, 7 months ago
6 years, 7 months ago6 years, 7 months ago@asa-kaplan – The webinar series is one that FOSSIL typically offers each semester (usually once per month for 4 months). In Fall 2016, the theme was “Fundamentals of Fossils.” In Spring 2017, the theme was “Women in Paleontology.” This semester’s theme is the “FOSSIL Roadshow,” which is modeled loosely after PBS’ “Antiques Roadshow” tv sh…[Read more]

6 years, 7 months ago6 years, 7 months agoI’m looking forward to the start of the Fall 2017 webinar series, “FOSSIL Roadshow,” scheduled for this Wednesday (Sept 20) at 7pm Eastern! This time I get to participate in the series as a general attendee, instead of working behind-the-scenes. 😉 I believe the first episode will feature Dry Dredgers such as @jkallmeyer, trilobite expert Dr. B…[Read more]

6 years, 7 months ago6 years, 7 months ago@jeanette-pirlo, @cindy-birkner – The images show two different specimens, correct? The coloration and shape certainly look different. The first picture looks like a gastropod cast to me. I’m not sure what the second and third pictures are. @vperez, @rleder, @aaron-woodruff – any ideas??

Eleanor Gardner replied to the topic Wood in the forum Paleobotany 6 years, 7 months ago
6 years, 7 months ago6 years, 7 months agoHi, @mackenzie-smith! I recently toured the paleobotany collections here at the KU Natural History Museum. Do you know Rudy Serbet? He showed me lots of sample of permineralized wood (as well as fern impressions) from the Pennsylvanian of Kansas.
Slightly unrelated, but still interesting: Rudy mentioned an acid peel technique on coal balls as…[Read more]

Eleanor Gardner replied to the topic Accreted Terranes in the forum Fossils of the Pacific Northwest 6 years, 7 months ago
6 years, 7 months ago6 years, 7 months agoHi, @mackenzie-smith! I haven’t collected any fossils from accreted terrains in the northwest, but I am interested to learn more. Could you share picture or two of what fossils from terranes in the northwest look like? I’m thinking of the “squeezed” looking trilobites from the Conasauga shale in Georgia, which look squeezed due to low-grade me…[Read more]
