@jay-clapoll on first pass this appears to be a naturally weathered rock surface, but could you take some pictures from different angles?
-
Yes I have one more picture from a little further away I’ll post, but it looked like the sucker part of an octopus arm. As if it pressed it’s arm into the mud. If it’s natural i would be shocked honestly.
-
And i can’t really think of how it would be man made, but I posted it if you want to check it out, @mason-hintermeister
-
@jay-clapoll It is still hard to make out, but compare with online pictures of Sigillaria and Lepidodendron which are possible finds in rock from your area.
-
Ok cool! Thank you. I thought it was an interesting find for just stumbling onto it. I’ll look it up to see. Also I’ll def get more pics hopefully soon.
-
the pattern has a well-defined shape, no?
-
@evripidis-papaevripidis yes it was very defined I can’t remember if they were in-dents or reverse but the edges were clearly visible. Why do you ask?

-
@owen-webb whilst this does not appear to be a fossil, the geology of your area suggests that there is very real potential for marine fossils from before the dinosaurs in the vicinity, so keep looking!!!
-
Where in Allegany county? I’m in Cumberland.

You’d need a paleobotanist or a botanist to identify this, idrk plants. I’m a conservationist and paleontologist so don’t exactly know, it is quite cool though!
-
there are so many species of fossil Plant like this, it Can be mariopteris, neuropteris, alethopteris, … I’m not a professional then i can’t know if this is one of what i Sayed

Im not sure this is a fossil. Still it looks like a type of oyster.
My apologies. I judged too fast. Oyster fossils come in all shapes and sizes. So I believe you have a fossilized oyster shell.
I checked my specimens.
Maybe some water worm hideout
