Thank you for your input.  Do you or anyone happen to know if I should try to “clean” this up more — maybe try to remove some matrix?

Hi!  Found this in our farmyard (Eastern South Dakota) while out rockhounding.  A coral of some sort – maybe?

    Hi Walter!

I didn’t get your attachment from your last message — a more detailed SD geologic map — would you mind sending it again?

    Thank you,

    Gail

Found in Sully Co SD on a field border.  Picture 2 has a men’s size 7 boot next to it for size reference.  Picture 3 (image 3727) is a close-up of part of the item.  It is possible to go get additional pictures of the item soon as snow is mostly gone if more detail is needed.  Thank you all!

    Hi Walter @walter-stein !

I posted pictures of my 2 black rocks or possible bone(s).  I hope you can take a look and, if you think they are something potentially, let me know.  I think they remind me of something like scutes(?).  They just aren’t a typical looking rock.  Hope you are having a great day!

    Thank you,

    Gail

Hi!  I picked this blackish rock(?) in a sunflower field in central South Dakota.  I also picked up 1 other black rock (2 total) specimen(s) on this same field which I will post in a separate post.  It is heavy for its size and has a crusty grainy texture to it.  Not magnetic (dang!).  I can attempt more pictures if requested — the light wasn’t great here today.  Anyway I hope someone out there might be able to help identify this!

    Thank you all,

    Gail

Didn’t realize how bad some of the pictures I first submitted would look.  Here are a few other shots.

Forgive me.  New to this thought I was replying properly but see I messed up.  Jim, thank you for the links & Jack, thank you for the info to not mess with the matrix or specimen!

Thank you Jack for the links.  I don’t think I had found that website prior as I really didn’t know it was as extensive as it is.  My read on this specimen is that — yes, I thought digit/toe maybe… especially when I turned it over.   It is very heavy for its size.  It was found almost dead center SD in NE Sully County.  I picked up some smaller black rocks also that upon further sharing with a few friends who rockhound — they suspicion that they are bone.  But that’s a different find.  Thank you for the suggestion to not mess with the matrix — I have been torn by that idea.  SD School of Mines is about a 3 hour drive one way for me but I may need to make a trip there this winter.

I also picked up the fossil I posted on my account on this same field which SD School of Mines tentatively ID’d per email pictures and I related on my account posting.  I would love any feedback on that fossil also as no one with expertise has had a hands-on look at them yet.

Found this slightly in-ground in a sunflower field this fall.  Has a matrix on it.  As I have just joined this website and have now seen one of the tutorials about removing matrix — I may give this a try to see if it reveals more.  I only fear I may wreck something as a novice.  I apologize for the snapshots — I will try to improve this also.  Let me know if you think you may be able to identify or if any additional shots (or better shots) are needed.  Thank you all.

Gail Tennant commented on their own Fossil #029523

I did receive a response from emailed photos that this is possibly a colonial coral often called chain coral (Halysites) and either Ordovician or Silurian in age (485 to 419 million years).

    • @gail-tennant This is a coral but not a chain coral, The corallites in your specimen are all bunched together. In a chain coral the corallites are linked on the edges and look like a chain – hence the name. I would hesitate to place an age on this since it appears to have been transported by water or glaciers depending on your location.
