5 years, 8 months ago5 years, 8 months agoI only know of one species of Orthonybyoceras – O. dyeri. In the same family is Treptoceras duseri. I’m not entirely sure how to best distinguish between them and I think they both can be found in the Grant Lake Fm. Any advice from other Ordovician folks? @jkallmeyer@kyle-hartshorn@bheimbrock
-
My apologies for not replying sooner. No reply for me means “I don’t know”. At times, these two were thought to be synonymous. I think that Treptoceras is more common and has a wider range. I’ll have to look dig into some siphuncle photos and see if I can tell the difference. Thanks for asking! @jbauer @matthew-croxton

6 years, 7 months ago6 years, 7 months agoI’m looking forward to the start of the Fall 2017 webinar series, “FOSSIL Roadshow,” scheduled for this Wednesday (Sept 20) at 7pm Eastern! This time I get to participate in the series as a general attendee, instead of working behind-the-scenes. 😉 I believe the first episode will feature Dry Dredgers such as @jkallmeyer, trilobite expert Dr. B…[Read more]

7 years ago7 years ago@bmacfadden – Check out our Twitter conversation with Shanan Peters of UW! He seems very interested in myFOSSIL connecting with the ROCKD app! That app already does some of the things we’ve been discussing, which is great.
@kyle-hartshorn, I recall that you had some useful feedback about a potential myFOSSIL app in Pittsburgh. Want to chime in here? 😉

Hi, all! That sounds like a fantastic find! Would you be able to take any preliminary photos with Brenda? Are there any brachioles on the flattened side? I’ve always wondered if they would be different from the other four sides…
-
@jbauer I know I can take cell phone photos fairly easily but I don’t know if I can get Brenda into the pictures as well 🙂 These are mostly fragmentary so they won’t look too good. There is one that is better than the rest although still not perfect. What level of photo are you wanting? I’m also not sure what you mean by the flattened side. – Jack
-
Hi, Jack – Maybe you are thinking of Elaeacrinus? Eleutherocrinus has one side that is completely flat with a strangely small petaloid ambulacrum. I’ll email you picture of it. I’ll add it to my list that there is a specimen with brachioles there. Maybe Colin and I can make a trip to the CMC this semester!

7 years, 6 months ago7 years, 6 months agoFound on a Dry Dredgers field trip in May 2016. I really wish I took better field notes of the location, though! *Vinlandostrophia* sp., possibly *Vinlandostrophia ponderosa* based on the size (though not necessarily). Was this from our June mini-conference trip, or the May Dry Dredgers trip? Shoot, this was from the June mini-conference trip–I got my dates all confused in my head! Pretty sure it was Day 1, Stop 2, because I remember picking up this one right by a very slippery drainage channel near the van. Thanks for the help, Kyle!
