4 years, 9 months ago4 years, 9 months agoIt looks like a Pecopteris fossil. There are a few species. P subcrenulata, P mazoniana, P aborescense. There’s also Lobatopteris lumuriana that look like Pecopteris.
I’m not sure how many of these are actually still valid. I’m leaning toward Pecopteris mazoniana for your specimen. I’d google Pecopteris fossils from mazon creek to find a…[Read more]

4 years, 10 months ago4 years, 10 months agoThe left tooth is an upper Great White (Charcharodon carcharias) tooth. It has a thin root and irregular serrations.
The right one looks like a lower tooth. Its probably a Carcharodon hastalis. Its an extinct type of white shark.

Ya, it looks like coral pieces in a limestone matrix. All the little circles look like coral polyps.

6 years, 7 months ago6 years, 7 months agoThe “next adventure” wasn’t fossil related 🙁 … I went to the South Pacific Humback Whale calving grounds in Vava’u for a few weeks (just returned a few days ago).
Although they are not prehistoric, being with “living” cetaceans in the wild is pretty cool. You can easily imagine what the Miocene and Pliocene seas must have looks like with the…[Read more]

6 years, 9 months ago6 years, 9 months ago@lcone, @egardner – Here are a few more pictures… We also visited the Mace Brown museum. Bobby and Sarah recently finished prepping the “Cone Whale” and put it on display. It’s the most complete baleen whale ever collected from the PCS Mine in Aurora, NC. Also, it was collected by Lee Cone!!!
And finally, this is completely unrelated to any…[Read more]
