3 months, 2 weeks ago3 months, 2 weeks agoNo, I’m not sure if this is modern or not. I’m not an expert and try to do my research. That is why I joined this site. I’ve always loved fossil hunting in Texas where I grew up. There are so many ancient coral heads that start in the water’s edge and continue up into my in-laws back yard. Various kinds of corals are imbedded in those rocks.…[Read more]

A beautiful tabulate coral

You may want to look further under Cnidaria.

Are you sure that’s not modern?

you can absolutely put an age in them. go to macrostrat.org and choose geologic map. Search up the town and play around. It’ll do a pretty good job of getting you the right data, you’ll just have to check the deposition environments to make sure the match what you find. These fossils are gorgeous

It’s tabulata alright

I have conducted my own research on this specimen, and have found it to be Blue Coral. Blue Coral live only in the Indo-Pacific in the tropics of the Indian and Pacific oceans (University of Florida). Blue Coral (Heliopora Coerulea) is a species of colonial coral. It is one of the only that produce a large skeleton.

4 months, 1 week ago4 months, 1 week ago@mason-hintermeister Sorry still learning how to use this app, and my pics may be scattered and not in the same group. The fossil was found on a rocky beach dominated by large ancient coral heads in central Philippines. I used to collect fossils as a kid in Texas, USA and knew more then than I know now at 70. I get into research and adding fossil…[Read more]

@jerry-gray definitely a coral, hard to say whether it is a fossil or not without knowing the geological history of the island (having trouble fining an adequate geologic map) and a better knowledge of corals than I have

Pic 1. This looks like sponge. Pic 2. Looks like tabular coral. Pic. 3. & 4. Pic. 5 top middle . Egg shaped structure with holes. Maybe a different kind of sponge. Fascinating specimen.
All 5 pics are of the same specimen. I identify them as top, bottom or backside, and the views of the edges.
It’s all one big coral specimen, maybe with some matrix on it
